Hisaronu History |
![]() Historical Hisaronu
Not too many years ago the popular resort village of Hisaronu was just a small hamlet lining the road that leads to Oludeniz from Fethiye, with a couple of pensions providing cheap and basic accommodation to passers-by. The last decade has seen tremendous growth here though, thanks to two reasons: first to provide extra accommodation and services to Oludeniz, and second to provide accommodation for people wishing to hike the famous Lycian Way, which begins very close by.
Now Hisaronu is just as popular as Oludeniz, and with its vibrant nightlife it’s actually a preferred destination for some holidaymakers who like to party! Whatever your reason for choosing a holiday in Hisaronu, you’ll find there’s always plenty to see and do in the surrounding region.
Visiting the Ghost Town
There are numerous historical and ancient sites within striking distance of your Hisaronu accommodation, but the closest (just a couple of miles away) is the ghost town of Kayakoy. This is not an ancient historical site, but reflects far more modern history. Visit this, one of the area’s top tourist attractions while on holiday in Hisaronu, and you’ll find hundreds of abandoned homes and buildings that have lain deserted since an agreement between the Greeks and the Turks in 1923. The large village is now preserved as a museum. Read more about it on our Hisaronu Excursions page.
Fethiye
Just a quick dolmus ride from Hisaronu is the main town for this part of Southern Turkey, Fethiye. This is an ancient market town and has several historical attractions to visit. It’s most famous for the Lycian rock tombs that were chiselled into the hillside above the town thousands of years ago. Some are still very well preserved, and should not be missed during your Hisaronu holiday.
Also in the town are ruins from other periods on Fethiye’s history. There’s a Roman amphitheatre and from more recent history, a medieval fortress.
